About serinahartwell

Did you ever have an itch you couldn’t scratch, a feeling that you’re supposed to be doing something else, something bigger with your life? Something that would touch the souls of the rest of mankind and justify your place amongst our fellow men, but you just couldn’t put your finger on what? I spent the best part of 40 years looking for the answer, and low and behold, I finished back where I started, with writing. I sometimes question why I didn’t just turn in the opposite direction, I would have got there straight away, but my path led me away from writing when I was just a teenager, because I lacked the confidence to pursue the dream. Reminiscing one day, the thought occurred to me that if I had found writing back then, I wouldn’t have taken the journeys that led me to write The Hidden Saga. My name is Serina Hartwell. I’m the mother of two wonderful children, who grew up when I blinked. I come from an average size town in West Yorkshire, England. The same place where the Bronte sisters were born, and I am from the village in the mill town I write about. Growing up in an industrial town, and coming from a working class background, I was surrounded by the mills, which were once the life blood of the community. Decrepit and falling into disrepair, they shadowed the place where I lived, serving as a reminder that our town once thrived. I watched as one by one, the mills went out of business and closed, serving to inspire my story, while changing the landscape around me. My mother worked in the mills when I was a child. I recall every night, my father taking my brother and I to the mill to collect her and walk her home over the lonely beck-side. These trips along the shortcut are embedded throughout Hidden, as my childish imagination finally materialised on the page. It was only recently that I found my way back to writing, when I suddenly found out that I was seriously ill. It’s funny how life has a way of bringing you full circle and offering you sharp reminders that time is slipping through your fingers. One moment I was fine and the next I was in a very bad place. Today you look upon the writing of one of the luckiest people on the planet, as I recovered and moved forward. Luck I intend to build upon. With doors closing all around me and my timely reminder, my life reached a turning point, I knew I had to find the thing I was supposed to be doing and get on with it. That’s when I really started looking. In August 2010, I had the most intense urge to write. It came from nowhere, so I did the only thing I could, I borrowed my daughter’s laptop. I didn’t even know at the time if I could write. The last creative thing I wrote was at school. I didn’t know if I could connect with the page, let alone complete a book, but one thing is for sure, I haven’t stopped writing since, nor do I intend to. So, allow me to introduce you to my work. May I begin by introducing Bronte, in The Hidden Saga? I hope you enjoy Hidden and the many more to come. Anyone who follows my page on Facebook, will know how I occasionally like to praise and highlight the good work of others. Well here is something that really impressed me. There’s so much skill, ingenuity and creativity involved in what they just did and they made it look seamless.

I think that they covered all of my favourite films. Take a look and tell me which one is your favourite.

I doff my cap to them.

The Wheel

Image

The Wheel

The shutters are down

The air is thin

I search my heart

But I know not where to begin

I cannot settle east

I cannot settle west

I need a break of fortune

To offer me some rest

For where my heart is taking me

My talent can be pursued

But conversation fights me all the way

And persecutes my will

My strength is waning within me now

I fight to keep my way

I know not which direction I should take

To turn, to break away

I run from the wheel that grinds me down

The one that bears on me

I keep my tender straight and true

And head for freedom’s light

The doorbell rang this morning
A princess she came calling
She swaddled me in love and kindness
Those blue eyes looked to me

She asked me for a favour
A cat she did want near her
We took a journey step by step
To find her stripy prize

She climbed up slowly, step by step
To find her destination
Big boots aloft, she climbed up high
Mount Everest we were bound

She neared the top and called ‘pussy cat’
‘Pussy cat where are you?’
Her prey stayed low and hid there too
She didn’t like her guest

Big eyes befell me, green and black
Blue eyes did follow suit
They looked to me to offer hope
That their true dreams wouldn’t elope

I looked upon them quickly now
My glance shot from one to the other
My heart strings pulled from my chest
As sense abandoned me

A brother’s call rang proudly
A brother’s call rang true
The pussy cat hunt stalled fast
And green eyes thanked me too

The shaking did stop quickly
The pursuit abandoned now
Blue eyes took me somewhere new
To chase her a new prize through

Her blonde curls did bound all the way
As the cat got to live another day
Curiosity took her somewhere new
To see some chickens, all bright and new

Oh child of mine, you suffered
In your plight to make it to my side
To walk, to sing, to dance among the flower
To be held so tightly, so loved, so longed for

Lost before your journey’s end
Taken back to the heavens and the stars
My loss breeds mourn for your tender heart
To walk among the souls

I feel you close to me, my tender child
You came to me and beckoned
To love you more, a love so true
I touch your essence longing for more

My heart is missing the piece that is you
That belongs in its tender embrace
My heart goes out searching, lost, withdrawn
And waiting for your grace

My heart holds dear, for the day we meet
On heaven’s planes it shall wait
Listening for your affectionate whisper
Until reunited we will be

My Work Featured On Daily Literature Deviations on DeviantArt.Image

A chapter from my first ever book has been featured on the Daily Literature Deviations. They promoted my work in their September 26th, 2012 edition and I wanted to send out special thanks to them.

It was a wonderful end to a really poor day for me. I discovered that my work had been featured, after taking a sick day and nipping onto t
he site. When I looked at the comments for the first chapter of my book, I couldn’t believe my eyes and went from a lurgy filled day to cloud nine. I’ve struggled to get my work out into the community, and anyone who has walked this path before me will understand where I am coming from when I say it is so hard, and can really get you down at times, so when I looked and saw my work, I was instantly lifted again, and really grateful for the recognition.

I would like to send my gratitude out, and give special thanks to NicSwaner who suggested my work and to LadyofGaerdon who featured my work, giving me such a fantastic write-up. They are fellow artists and very talented.

HIDDEN. Chapter 1 by Serina Hartwell by ~SerinaHartwell

Suggester: “I’m not sure how this has
received such little recognition.
It’s excellently paced and though
I am only one chapter in I’m hooked,
despite it being a genre I don’t prefer.”

I write because I have a head full of story which I want to share with the world. It’s a story which keeps unfolding and every time I think I’ve reached the end, another bit unravels, so to hear that I’ve put something out there which has brought enjoyment to others, is more than satisfying to me. It gives me a boost, every time someone tells me they have enjoyed my work.

Daily Literature Deviations, you have made my day, and when I’m feeling better, I will do a celebratory dance around the room. Thank you to all who have followed my work and supported me. You are the reason I write – you are the best! 😀
